The build-up to IPL’s biggest rivalry clash has been clouded by uncertainty with both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma facing late fitness tests ahead of the much-anticipated MI vs CSK clash.
Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons confirmed that the final call on Dhoni’s availability will be made just before the match. “The decision on MS Dhoni will be taken tomorrow by him and the medical staff if he is absolutely ready to go,” Simons said.
The wicketkeeper missed the opening phase of IPL 2026 due to calf strain, sitting out several matches for CSK. However, recent developments offer encouraging signs.
During the training session at the Wankhede Stadium, the 44-year-old underwent intensive training on the field which included both wicket and batting practice. Dhoni spent nearly 40 minutes behind the stumps in the nets, with Sarfaraz Khan and Urvil Patel taking turns with the bat. It was one of his first overtime goals of the season and a key step in his rebuilding process.
Despite the positive signals, CSK is expected to proceed cautiously. With Sanju Samson currently handling the wicket-keeping duties, the team management is unlikely to push Dhoni back into full action. If declared fit, Dhoni could be deployed as an impact player to better manage his workload.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are also waiting for clarification on Rohit Sharma’s participation. The franchise confirmed that the opener is still being assessed, with a final decision on his availability coming just before the match.
Notably, Rohit started his IPL 2026 campaign on a high with a match-winning performance for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, his momentum soon faltered and his rhythm was disrupted by a string of low scores. The setback worsened during the encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where a hamstring injury forced him off the field midway through the match.
