A woman from Mumbai became the talk of social media after she clashed with a senior BJP minister at a political rally. The incident took place on April 21 in Mumbai’s Worli area. It was caught on camera and quickly went viral on social media.
The woman was reportedly stuck in heavy traffic for over an hour. She said she was trying to pick up her child from school. The traffic jam was caused by a BJP rally called ‘Mahila Jan Aakrosh’.
The event was organized by Maharashtra Government Minister Girish Mahajan. The demonstration was held at the Maidan Jamboree to protest against the opposition parties.
The BJP-led NDA was earlier unable to pass a constitutional amendment bill aimed at accelerating the 33% reservation for women in legislatures. However, there were not enough votes in favor as the opposition argued that it was a “delimitation” disguised as a women’s reservation.
Tired of waiting, the woman got out of the car. She walked straight into the rally where Mahajan was addressing the media. She confronted him directly and loudly.
“Get out of here. You’re causing a traffic jam,” she said.
She wanted to know why the meeting was held on a busy road. She pointed out that vacant land was available nearby.
She refused to back down even when the police tried to intervene. She also yelled at the police officers and demanded that the traffic chaos be resolved first.
Opposition parties quickly used the clip. Leaders from Congress and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) shared the video to criticize the BJP.
The video goes viral
The video went viral almost immediately. Social media users are loud and wide praising the “brave lady”. Many called her brave for saying what millions felt but never said.
One user wrote that she spoke for every Indian who pays income tax. According to another user, she reminded politicians that they are public servants, not rulers.
“Someone give this lady a Bharat Ratna – she spoke for a million Indians – 2% of Indians who pay income tax… Luckily she is a woman and the ‘protest’ was about the women’s reservation bill, that’s why the babus kept quiet!” commented a social media user.
“Every politician has been exposed. We citizens hate every politician who does this nonsense on the road,” wrote one user.
“This is not limited to any one party. It applies to all politicians,” wrote one user. “The problem she faced is a problem shared by every citizen,” the user added.
“This is what courage looks like,” wrote one user.
Another called it “the beginning” of more such public confrontations: “This is the beginning, I sense more confrontation in the future.”
“Perfect, like this, more votes are needed, brave lady, learned lady,” chimed in from another.
At the same time, many users of social networks considered her behavior inappropriate. Some said she should not have spoken so rudely to senior police officers.
