The government on Tuesday (21 April 2026) proposed stricter standards for the publication of content generated by artificial intelligence, proposing improvements to IT rules that would require clear and continuous labels identifying synthetically generated information visible throughout the duration of a visual display.
This would replace the earlier requirement to ensure “prominent visibility” of AI tags under IT rules.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) added this to the draft amendment to the IT rules, which among other changes also proposes to bring independent newsmakers on the centre’s radar and mandate compliance with the recommendations, extended the deadline for stakeholder feedback to May 7 from the already extended timeline of April 29, 2026.
