
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, predicting that high temperatures will continue to persist in these regions till April 24. Other states under heat wave warning by the IMD include Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The Met office further predicted hot and humid weather for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.
“Heat wave very likely in isolated areas of Haryana Chandigarh & Delhi, Punjab, ….East Uttar Pradesh…, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Uttar Pradesh” till April 24. Odisha and Rajasthan are likely to experience heat waves in the next three days. The IMD has today forecast a heat wave for Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar and for Vidarbha (Maharashtra) between April 24 and 26.
“Hot and humid weather conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal during April 22-26; Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam during 22-25, Konkan and Goa on 23,” the Met department said in its latest weather bulletin.
Apart from this, residents of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi can expect warm night conditions till April 24. Warm night conditions are likely in Chhattisgarh till April 25 in Odisha during the next 3 days.
Temperatures will rise by 3-4°C
The IMD predicted a gradual increase in maximum temperatures of 3-4°C over central India between April 23 and 27: “A gradual increase in maximum temperatures of 3-4°C likely over northwest India by April 25.” In Gujarat, the maximum temperature is expected to increase by 2-3°C between April 24 and 27.
Today’s weather in Delhi
The nation’s capital is on yellow alert due to the heat wave and the weather warning will remain in place for the next two days. An IMD press release on April 21 said, “Gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C leading to isolated to scattered heatwave conditions over Delhi during next 5 days. Maximum temperatures likely to be above normal to markedly above normal during next 5 days.”
