Following the explosion at a fireworks unit in Virudhunagar on April 19 that left at least 25 dead and many others injured, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a comprehensive counter-affidavit and submit suggestions to prevent accidents at fireworks units in the district.
N. Sathish Kumar and M. Jothiraman said the latest incident was very disturbing. Such deaths were reported almost every month and many of the victims were women. There should be compulsory insurance. People’s livelihood was at stake, but safety measures should be put in place, the court said.
