
Asian Games gold medalist Shiva Narwal won the men’s 10m air pistol gold medal on the opening day of the ISSF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday. India secured a total of three medals with Chirag Sharma winning bronze in the same event while Panaah Bhugra added silver in the women’s 10m air rifle.
Narwal, a former mixed team world champion, topped the podium with a score of 241.8 to finish 1.8 points ahead of Uzbekistan’s Sodikjon Abdullaev, who took silver. India’s Chirag Sharma completed the podium with a score of 218.9. Another Indian finalist Abhinav Deshwal finished seventh with 136.7.
In the junior women’s 10m air rifle, Panaah Bhugra secured silver with a final score of 250.6. She had previously qualified for the final with 629.4 and maintained a strong position throughout, showing remarkable consistency. India’s Shambhavi Kshirsagar, who topped the qualifying round with an impressive 634.0, finished fourth in the final with 206.5. India’s third runner-up Anvii Rathod placed sixth with 164.6.
Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s 25m pistol precision shots began, along with the first 75 targets in both men’s and women’s skeet. The women’s 25m pistol rapid stage and final, along with the remaining 50 target and skeet finals, are scheduled for Wednesday. The medals in the men’s 25m pistol and the men’s and women’s 50m prone rifle will also be decided.
With one gold, one silver and one bronze, India led the medal standings at the end of the opening day.
A total of 284 athletes from 25 federations are competing in Cairo, with India fielding the largest contingent of 71 shooters. At last year’s ISSF World Junior Championships in Suhl, Germany and New Delhi, Indian shooters won 37 medals, including 17 gold, the highest among any participating country.
