The demand for land titles (pattas) by the fishing community in Mylapore Assembly constituency reached a critical administrative stage six months ago, just before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were announced, DMK candidate Dha Velu said.
Fisherfolk recently staged a demonstration against Mr. Vela, the sitting MLA from Mylapore. When asked about this, he said: “Only six months ago we talked to everyone and came to a decision. Now they are demanding the next phase – pattas. If I agree to issue land titles just to get votes, it will be a problem for me later. Instead, it will be dealt with in a legally appropriate way.” Almost 50% of the planned relocation of tenements has already started, he added.
