Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya’s mid-innings strike proved to be the turning point as Tilak Varma scripted a stunning comeback for the side against Gujarat Titans in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter on April 20. What appeared to be a routine moment during a drinks break changed the course of the match.
The moment gained even more attention after a video of the exchange went viral on social media, showing an animated Pandya talking to Tilak in the middle. At that point, MI were under pressure and Tilak was struggling with 19 off 22 with wickets falling around him. The likes of Dane Malewar, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav have already departed, while the Naman Dhir set also failed to convert his start.

What followed was a complete shift. From a cautious 19 off 22, Tilak exploded and smashed 82 runs off his next 23 deliveries. The shift turned from a rebuilding effort into a statement knock, when he brought up his first IPL hundred and charged MI to a competitive 199 on the complex surface of Ahmedabad.
Speaking after the match, Pandya revealed the gist of that conversation and emphasized the need for Tilak to trust his natural game.
“I think I realized that the kind of talent that Tilak has, he really doesn’t have to worry. So my message to him was just watch the ball and hit the ball. It was time for him to come out and deliver. Tilak, the group and Mumbai Indians needed that a lot,” Pandya said at the post-match presentation.
The impact of that knock went beyond just the scoreboard. He lifted a side that was struggling for momentum and injected faith into a campaign that was beginning to take off.
HOW TILAK’S TONE RAISED ME
Tilak’s unbeaten 101 off 45 balls came at a crucial momentwhen MI were placed at 103 for 4 after 14 overs. What followed was a calculated acceleration that completely changed the pace of the innings and turned a modest total into a daunting one.
That late surge carried over into the second inning. Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball and set the tone early, while Ashwani Kumar dismantled the middle order with figures of 4 for 24. Gujarat Titans never found their footing and were bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs, handing Mumbai Indians an impressive 99-run win and a much-needed turnaround.
