Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad is usually a horror story but this time the script has flipped on Gujarat Titans. And at the heart of it was a man who, until recently, looked like he was in a two-horse race with Ajinkya Rahane for the ‘Most Outstanding Captain Without Aura’ award.
Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t taken the new ball in the IPL since 2022. When he finally did, he needed just one delivery to end his five-innings drought. We still call Bumrah the ‘X-factor’, but this season he’s often been treated more like a backroom luxury than an upfront weapon.

“It’s quite fascinating. I see a lot of people asking why Jassi didn’t bowl in front, but he fell for the first time more than seven or eight times in his career,” Hardik Pandya said after the match. “So it’s not Hardik Pandya’s problem.; it’s “everyone’s” problem. Bumrah is so special that you naturally want to save him for later.”
FROM DISAPPOINTMENT TO DOMINATION
Mumbai Indians management and “Hardik Pandya” completely broke Bumrah from inside. Watching him like this is truly heartbreaking. pic.twitter.com/NLlXVzShwg— PRADEEP PATEL (@Pradeep35962385) April 18, 2026
Just a few days ago, footage emerged of a frustrated Jasprit Bumrah circling staring off into the distance from the boundary rope. Fast forward to Ahmedabad and the mood changed the moment he was given the new ball against the Gujarat Titans top order, which most bowlers would prefer to avoid.
Bumrah took on Sai Sudharsan and produced one of those teasing full balls that shaped just right. Caught in between, Sudharsan pushed him with heavy feet and managed only a cut on the toe.
Result? Straight catch for debutant Krish Bhagat in the circle.
One ball, one wicket, drought ended, spirits renewed.
Of course the stage had already dramatically planted by Tilak Varmawho had previously “bounced his brains” out of Attack of the Titans. His maiden IPL century off 45 balls was as ruthless as it was unexpected, leaving GT staring at a 200-plus chase against a Mumbai side that usually thrives in such situations.
And just as Gujarat were still processing the task, Bumrah came in to make things worse. If Tilak lit the fire, Bumrah made sure there was no going back.
What makes this a ‘Game of the Day’ is not just the goal, but the decision behind it. It was only the seventh time in Bumrah’s IPL career that he opened the bowling. He previously did it twice in 2014, three times in 2018 and once in 2022. Rare move, immediate impact.
“That’s exactly what we’ve been asking for in a lot of games now,” Mitchell McClenaghan said on the post-match show. “With nobody else able to penetrate with the new ball, they needed Jasprit Bumrah to come out and be used as an attacking weapon.
END OF THE DROUGHT
Relief for Jasprit Bumrah!

Before this spell, Jasprit Bumrah was going through a phase that felt almost unnatural to him. A staggering 153 balls without a wicket. For someone widely regarded as India’s best bowling asset since Kapil Dev, the five-wicket haul was less of a trick and more of a puzzle that no one could quite solve.
That’s why this call felt like more than just a tactical improvement. The delivery of the new ball to Bumrah turned out to be a potential ‘game of the season’ for Mumbai Indians.
From bottom of the table with one win in five, MI rode Bumrah’s early breakthrough into full-blown collapse, bowling GT for the lowest total in IPL history.
Mitchell McClenaghan felt the plan was as much about timing as intent.
“They used him in the first couple of games to try and break that partnership. That was what was needed tonight against top three tough teams. Maybe it’s not a plan you put out every game, some teams have stronger middle orders where you need him later on – but it was spot on tonight,” he said.
More than just two points, it was like a reset for Mumbai Indians. The win moved them up to seventh in the table with four points and, perhaps more importantly, restored some faith in a campaign that had started to take off. They face a familiar test next as they host Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede on April 23, with a chance to build on that momentum.
