The Ambasamudram assembly constituency along the lap of the Western Ghats, blessed with three major reservoirs but left with many infrastructural problems, is all set to witness a battle between the AIADMK and the Congress this time.
While the winners of the very first Assembly elections held in Tamil Nadu in the early 1950s were all Indian National Congress candidates, the Ambasamudram constituency favored independent candidate P. Chockalingam over Congress candidate Lakshmi Sankara Iyer in the first poll held in 1952. However, “business” became “business as usual” for Congress candidate Gsandar Gomatshi, who was elected in the next Digi Gomatshi assembly elections. 1957 and continued the winning streak till 1967, even though the DMK won that election and formed a government under the leadership of CN Annadurai.
