The JD(U) is expected to elect its new legislative leader on 20 April 2026 following the resignation of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister and his subsequent replacement by BJP’s Samrat Choudhary, who was sworn in as Chief Minister on 15 April. JD(U) legislature party meeting to be held in Patna, Kumar’s New address, Circular 7 The JD(U) legislature party leader will play an important role in the current NDA government led by Mr. Choudhary. Mr. Nitish Kumar was earlier the leader of the party in the state legislature.
The party post has been lying vacant since Mr. Kumar’s resignation as chief minister on April 14. There is speculation that senior leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, currently one of the two deputy chief ministers from the JD(U), could be elected as the leader of the legislature party. Mr. Choudhary, 69, a seven-term MLA from Sarainranjan constituency in Samastipur district, is said to be very close to Nitish Kumar. Party sources told The Hindu that the second deputy CM, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, 79, who is a nine-year MLA from Supaul constituency, is considered less likely due to his ill health.
