Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis alleged that the TMC hatched a conspiracy to include the names of infiltrators in the electoral rolls and claimed that while the party protested the SIR exercise, people whose names were deleted for “legitimate reasons” did not protest.
Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Mr. Fadnavis said that the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls has a constitutional provision to address the grievances of those who have not been omitted from the electoral rolls.
“Those whose names were deleted for legitimate reasons did not protest. Why only TMC has a problem? The Supreme Court made some observations on SIR but did not stop it, yet TMC wanted to stop the process completely,” he said.
“SIR has a constitutional provision that till the end, if any aggrieved person seeks redress, he can go to court and appeal. I welcome the Supreme Court’s order in this regard,” he said.
Mr. Fadnavis argued that such an exercise should be conducted every 10 years to remove the names of dead, displaced and ineligible voters, and alleged that the ruling TMC was opposed to win the upcoming assembly elections by “fraudulent means”.
