Royal Challengers Bengaluru will don their iconic green jerseys as part of their ‘Green Initiative’ during their home match against Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday 18th April. Made from recycled materials, these jerseys symbolize the franchise’s continued commitment to sustainability. Notably, Royal Challengers Bengaluru is the only carbon neutral T20 franchise in the world.
Since the inception of the initiative in 2011, RCB has consistently integrated sustainability into its operations with a focus on measurement, accountability and fan engagement to achieve carbon positivity.
Commenting on the initiative, Rajesh Menon, CEO of Royal Challengers Bengaluru said,
“Achieving carbon neutral status as a T20 franchise is the result of years of dedicated work. The green jerseys reflect this commitment and we hope this initiative inspires our fans and stakeholders to adopt more responsible and sustainable practices.”
A core aspect of RCB’s sustainability efforts is a thorough analysis of fan behavior during matches. By conducting stadium-wide surveys across all stands, the franchise examines commuting patterns, carpooling habits and estimates carbon emissions per spectator to gain a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of fan travel.
Fans are also incentivized to use public transport to attend matches, with match tickets allowing access to the Bengaluru Metro.
At the stadium level, RCB has strengthened its waste management systems and ensured close monitoring and audits of waste segregation practices.
RCB uses various measures to reduce and offset carbon emissions, including stadium waste sorting and management, use of renewable energy sources such as solar lighting, and initiatives such as voluntary fan pledges to reduce reliance on conventional resources.
The franchise maintains a detailed assessment of its operational footprint, including emissions related to team travel, lodging and energy use. This includes analyzing travel distances and fuel consumption, accommodation-related emissions through room and night data, and verifying stadium energy use through diesel generator audits and electricity consumption records.
In addition, matchday sustainability audits will be conducted throughout the season to reinforce on-site accountability. These efforts will culminate in a comprehensive sustainability report, followed by an independent assurance process.
RCB have found themselves well in the playoffs, winning four of the five matches they have played so far.
