Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered yet another heavy defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season as Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down a target of 196 with seven wickets to spare in 21 balls at the Wankhede Stadium. The loss marked MI’s fourth defeat in five matches, leaving fans questioning the direction of the team under captain Hardik Pandya.
What happened in PBKS vs MI match?
Punjab Kings put in a strong all-round performance. Their bowlers restricted MI to 195/6 in 20 overs despite decent batting from the home side, powered by Quinton de Kock’s century. In response, the PBKS openers and middle-order batsmen eased the chase, fueled by aggressive hitting and intelligent spin. The dew factor in the second innings helped the batsmen, but the credit largely went to PBKS’ excellent performance in all departments.
Hardik Pandya reflects on Mumbai Indians’ latest loss
Hardik Pandya, who scored 14 off 12 balls in the match, looked visibly disappointed at the post-match presentation. He admitted that the team was fully played.
“To be very honest, I don’t have much to say right now. I think we really have to go back to the drawing board and see where we’re lacking. Is it individuals? Is it as a group? Is it as planning? We’ll just figure it out and see what we can do next,” Pandya said.
He praised the Punjab Kings for their better bowling, batting and fielding, noting how the ball turned early and the conditions changed later with dew.
“Having said that, they just beat us. They bowled better, batted better, bowled better, definitely, and that cost us the game. Do we really need to see, do we need to make some tough calls or do we need to go ahead and hope to turn things around? Those are tough questions that we have to answer at the end of the day and yes, ownership needs to be taken,” the MI captain said.
Team struggles continue for Mumbai Indians
This defeat highlighted the ongoing problems for the Mumbai Indians. The bowling unit struggled to contain the aggressive batting of Punjab Kings while the batting line-up failed to win the match on a good Wankhede pitch. Key players showed flashes of brilliance, but consistency throughout the team was lacking.
Hardik Pandya’s candid assessment signals a possible shake-up in strategy, combinations or even personnel as MI look to arrest their slide. With the season still underway, the five-time champions know they can’t afford another drop if they want to stay alive in the playoffs.
