The express silence in the delimitation bill on maintaining the current ratio of state seats prompted the Telugu Desam Party, a key member of the National Democratic Alliance, to approach Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Meghwal on Wednesday (April 15, 2026).
The two ministers assured Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu that the strength of the southern states in the Lok Sabha would not be weakened by the government, an assurance Mr Shah reiterated in the Lok Sabha on Thursday (April 16, 2026) evening. However, according to sources, the government is not planning to introduce any amendments to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 or the Delimitation Bill, 2026 to clarify this ambiguity.
