Mumbai Indians superstar and India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav continued to struggle for consistency in IPL 2026. On Thursday, the all-rounder was dismissed for the first ball against Punjab Kings in their home match at the Wankhede Stadium.
MI vs PBKS: Update | Scorecard
Suryakumar fell for a golden duck and edged a delivery that Arshdeep Singh tipped over him in the second over after Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bowl. He was caught at short third man.
It was a disappointment for Suryakumar, especially given the added responsibility in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out of the competition with a hamstring injury.
Suryakumar, who endured a stunning World T20 campaign with the bat, has managed just 106 runs in five matches for MI this season, crossing the 20-run mark only twice.
DROP IN FORM
The timing of this decline is particularly worrying. According to a PTI report earlier this week, the BCCI is considering a performance-based leadership model as the plan for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics begins to take shape. While Suryakumar’s tactical prowess as a captain is highly regarded as he recently led India to the 2026 World Cup title with an astute defensive display in the final, his personal batting form has deteriorated alarmingly.
The the upcoming tours of England and Ireland in June-July are now seen as a crucial test.
Although he currently has the support of head coach Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar needs to find consistency with the bat. Despite finding some rhythm at the start of 2026 with four half-centuries, his recent high pressure form is cause for concern. During India’s T20 World Cup campaign, his batting faltered when it mattered most, with scores of 18, 18, 11 and a duck in the final against New Zealand. This follows a disappointing 2025 where his strike rate dipped below 120, a stark contrast to the old sky.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is said to be cautious about the age factor; Suryakumar will be 37, almost 38 by the time the Olympics come around.
The statistics reveal two different identities. As the leader, Suryakumar currently boasts one of the highest winning percentages in T20I history. After the World Cup ended in March, his captaincy record stands at an impressive 40 wins in 52 matches, a win percentage of 80.76%. This put him narrowly ahead of Rohit Sharma’s career mark of 79.33%, marking him as India’s most successful T20I captain by volume and efficiency.
For Suryakumar, the equation is simple but daunting: he must rediscover the 360-degree consistency that made him a global force. In a transitional era where leadership is no longer a shield against failings in the batting, his role as captain is inextricably linked to the numbers he can produce. With India’s formidable front three and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi yet to be released, Suryakumar needs to find consistency to cement his place.
