Opposition support for the three bills that pave the way for women’s reservation in time for the 2029 general elections is crucial, according to the current arithmetic in the Lok Sabha, where the bills will be debated on April 16, 2026 and April 17, 2026, with the government falling short of a two-thirds constitutional majority.
. According to Article 368 of the Constitution, any amendment requires the support of two-thirds of the members present and voting. The current strength of the Lok Sabha is 540, if all members are present and voting, at least 360 members must vote in favour.
