The two were feared missing after the boat capsized in Thrissur’s Kole wetland

Two persons were missing after a mini boat carrying a group of five capsized in the Kole wetland at Nedupuzha in Thrissur district during heavy rain on Friday evening. The other three managed to swim to safety without injury.

The Kole Wetland was reportedly leased for aquaculture and the group had gone to feed the fish when the accident occurred. The fire brigade received an alarm around 7 p.m. The search for missing persons was called off around 10 p.m. due to bad weather and poor visibility. It will resume Saturday morning, officials said.

Thrissur witnessed heavy rains throughout the day and a holiday was declared on Saturday in view of the forecast of continued inclement weather. The area of the Kole wetland where the ship overturned is said to be quite deep.

Police sources said that it is still being verified whether the missing persons managed to escape undetected. “Only one of the three survivors is familiar with the missing persons and efforts are on to get details from him,” Nedupuzha police said.

The Kole Wetlands, spanning Thrissur and Malappuram districts, have traditionally alternated between rice cultivation and aquaculture.
