Will Sooryavanshi make his India debut in 2nd T20I? A 15-year-old drops a mysterious clue

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may finally make his long-awaited India debut when he takes on England in the second T20I in Bristol on Saturday. The 15-year-old opener traveled with the Indian team during the UK tour but is yet to feature in a match. He sat out both T20Is against Ireland before being benched for the opening T20I against England, which was washed out after India completed their innings.

On Friday, the teenager posted an Instagram story with the caption ‘New Chapter’, sparking speculation that he could be in line for his first international appearance. The left-hander earned his first India call-up after a breakthrough IPL season and has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket. Videos of his clean hitting during training went viral during the tour, further fueling calls for his inclusion.

However, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel suggested team management would teenagers to XI at the expense of established players.

“I think we have to respect the fact that we had our No.1 batsman in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma. Sanju was a World Cup player,” Morkel said on Friday.

“Samson had a great IPL. As a coaching staff, it’s only fair to show confidence and support for your players. Yes, there’s a young man knocking on the door and that’s exciting. But not just for the two players above, but for the whole group, it’s good to show our support.”

Morkel said that India wants to support players who have performed consistently on the international stage.

“It’s about standing alongside some guys who have won World Cups, who have performed well in difficult situations, and then pitching in to strengthen our top order as much as possible in those conditions,” he said.

The former South African fast bowler also praised the youngster’s attitude since he joined the team.

“I think he’s fit in very well. It can be intimidating with the networks as a 15-year-old on the international stage.”

“But from the few sessions we’ve had, he’s been very impressive. We’re all excited about how he’s doing. When he gets his chance, I’m sure he’ll be ready. It’s been a very smooth fit into the team.”

Sooryavanshi’s debut chances have come into more limelight due to Sanju Samson’s recent troubles. The wicket-keeper batsman managed scores of 5, 0 and 1 in his last three T20I innings, bringing him under control ahead of the second match.

India has not hinted that Sooryavanshi will be making his debut, but his Instagram post only added to the anticipation. The final decision will be clear when the playing XI is announced ahead of the second T20I in Bristol.
