Noida protest LIVE: Protests by factory workers in Noida turned violent on Monday, with incidents of vehicle burning, property damage and stone pelting reported from Phase 2 and Sector 60, police said.
Noida phase 2 industrial unrest
Officials said a large number of workers from various industrial units gathered in the morning to demand a long overdue wage hike, raising slogans as part of their demonstration.
Similar protests were reported in Sector 62 and Sector 84, including the Motherson facility. The protesters also blocked National Highway 9. The situation escalated when some protesters started destroying property, throwing stones and setting vehicles on fire.
The violence broke out a day after the Uttar Pradesh government introduced several steps to improve working conditions, including ensuring double overtime pay and timely payment of wages to workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar.
Meanwhile, authorities said sufficient police force under Gautam Buddh Nagar Commissionerate has been deployed in the industrial areas to maintain order.
Big traffic jams
The riots caused major traffic disruptions, leaving thousands of commuters stranded on roads leading to Delhi during the morning rush hour. Long queues of vehicles stretching for several kilometers were seen at the Delhi-Noida border, according to PTI.
