Environmental spirituality is about experiencing the divine through nature and recognizing the intrinsic value of the environment, said S. Ignacimuthu, Rector of College St. Xavier’s, Palayamkottai, and a noted academician.
Mr Ignacimuthu, an internationally renowned scientist with over 850 scientific publications, said the current ecological crisis is largely a result of human behavior while delivering a Father Gordon Endowment lecture on ‘Environmental Spirituality’ at Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada on Monday (April 6).
He explained that all forms of life are interconnected in the “web of life” and any damage to the environment ultimately affects human existence. He emphasized the spiritual dimension, noting that all major religions regard nature as sacred and view the environment as a medium through which the divine is experienced.
Mr. Ignacimuthu called for a change in lifestyle and urged individuals to reduce waste, avoid over-consumption and adopt eco-friendly practices. He warned that a life governed solely by materialism leads to environmental degradation as well as physical and psychological imbalance.
Held in memory of Douglas Gordon, an eminent educationist remembered for his commitment to values-based education and social responsibility, the program concluded with the message that caring for the environment not only ensures sustainability but also brings inner peace and a deeper connection with the divine.
