Industrialist Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairman of Biocon Limited, took to social media platform X and tagged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to highlight the bad road stretches on Hosur Road on Sunday. “While NHAI boasts of its road infrastructure across the country, why is the country’s key IT corridor NH44 – Hosur Road so poorly designed and poorly maintained? It’s an eyesore – medians and barricades are terrible and shoulders are unpaved. Despite several complaints over several years, no response,” she wrote.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) responded to it on X, saying that the stretch was completed in 2010 and has seen rapid urban and industrial growth since then. Currently, the section handles very high volumes of traffic, with more than one million daily commuters, adding to operational and maintenance challenges, the authority said. While the concessionaire carries out regular maintenance, in April 2025 regular renewal works, including resurfacing, were completed. NHAI has proposed four vehicular flyovers (VOPs), including Veerasandra (Biocon), and work is underway at three locations, he said.
“Excavation for the retaining wall has started at the Biocon site. Following suggestions from the Karnataka government, traffic police and BMRCL regarding the proposed ring road, the work has been suspended. The excavated portion has been temporarily backfilled. The contractor has been directed to restore the drainage and median barriers, along with asphalting of the damaged sections, NHAI work is underway.
It further said that the ongoing work of other agencies also affected the section. “Works related to BMRCL Metro including construction of four lane and service road are still ongoing with some sections requiring rectification. Engineering works such as cable laying by KPTCL have caused damage to guardrails which will be restored by the concerned authority,” it said.
