In a new twist to the alleged ‘honour’ killing in Palnadu district, Macherla circle police station inspector Venkata Ramana has been suspended for acting in favor of the late Chowdeswari’s father, who is accused of killing her.
Orders to that effect were issued on Sunday.
Accused Chandra Sreenu allegedly strangled his 22-year-old daughter Chowdeswari to death on March 18 when she got married against his will.
“Following the allegation that CI Venkata Raman did favor to the accused by accepting money, the police officer has been suspended,” Guntur Range Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarvashresth Tripathi said.
The victim, Chowdeswari, left her house on March 4 and married Nagaraja of Jammalamadaka village against her family’s wishes.
Mr. Chandra Sreenu later lodged a complaint about the “disappearance of the woman” with the Macherla town police. He even staged a protest and threatened to commit suicide by dousing himself with gasoline because he claimed the police had been negligent in tracking down his daughter.
The police tracked down the newly married couple and during interrogation, Chowdeswari allegedly said that she was in love with Nagaraj and the marriage was done with her consent.
However, the police advised the woman and sent her with her parents, even though she was a major.
According to the police, the accused allegedly killed her by strangulation and fabricated the scene to make it look like she ended her life.
The accused said that Chowdeswari ended his life due to family problems. However, the autopsy report indicates that it was not a suicide, the police said.
“The post-mortem revealed that Chowdeswari died either due to strangulation or suffocation,” a police officer told The Hindu on Sunday (April 5).
Police have already arrested Chandra Sreena and investigation is on.
