Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), who tried to break up commercial encroachments near Monda Market in Secunderabad, had to abandon their mission in the face of stiff resistance from shop owners on Saturday.
As part of the planned demolition drives across the city over the weekend, GHMC officials arrived at the site with earth-moving equipment and a heavy police escort. However, large crowds gathered on the spot in no time and resisted the attempt. People attacked the police personnel and laid down on the road to stop the progress of the machine.
During the demolition drive near Charminar, Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Mirza Rahmath Baig Quadri came in support of the shop owners and started arguing aggressively with the police and GHMC staff.
A GHMC statement in the evening informed that a special drive has been launched at several places across the city to clear encroachments on footpaths and roadsides.
