The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Plastics Manufacturers Association (TANPPA) has flagged the sharp rise in prices of key raw materials and blamed the operation of a large cartel that is restricting supply. The association called on the government to intervene and stabilize the situation.
“The price of low density polyethylene (LDPE) has increased from ₹110/kg in March 2026 to ₹171/kg now. They say it is because of the war,” said G. Sankaran, Tamil Nadu president, Pondy Plastic Association (TANPPA). “The price of linear low-density polyethylene and high-density polyethylene has also increased. The price of both these materials has increased from ₹100 to ₹165/kg,” he added.
He pointed out that large companies producing plastic raw materials should supply raw materials directly to plastic product manufacturers through their authorized dealers located in key cities. “Large manufacturing companies should under no circumstances sell raw materials in large quantities to traders and middlemen. Because traders buy several hundred tons of raw materials in bulk, they create artificial shortages in the market and increase prices through black market practices,” he explained.
The association said the government should ensure uninterrupted supply of raw materials to such units so that production can continue without interruption. They also demanded that the 18% GST levied on waste plastics and recycled plastic products be completely waived.
