The growing interest in semiconductor design and packaging services in India, driven by talent and innovation, was in line with the country’s push to expand the semiconductor industry, speakers said at a webinar on Friday (April 4, 2026).
A webinar titled “Career in Electronics and Semiconductors: Skills, Roles and Getting Started” was jointly presented by VIT, Vellore and The Hindu Education Plus as part of the Career Path series.
Speakers focused on how the semiconductor industry would shape the future of all industries and highlighted the high growth opportunities in the sector, driven by the boom in artificial intelligence and ever-growing demand for electronics.
Abhishek Chaudhary, DFT engineer at Advanced Micro Devices Inc., said that with the shift in focus from software to hardware, students found themselves at the exact intersection of time and opportunity. Electronics, he said, was a wide and varied highway offering career paths.
Kanchana Bhaaskaran, Vice-Chancellor, VIT Vellore highlighted the government’s support to academic institutions and startups through massive investment schemes. The India Semiconductor Mission 2021 was launched to set up chip manufacturing plants, packaging and test units and support start-ups in chip design as well as train young engineers, she said.
Sivanantham Sathasivam, director of V-Space, VIT Vellore, said semiconductor manufacturing has been driven by demand from electronics, automotive, aerospace and other sectors, encouraging students to pursue their interests in physics, chemistry, quantum physics and revel in building small circuits, developing simple hardware, home automation, robotics or weather.
Abhirami R., Staff Engineer, Samsung Semiconductor India Research, Bengaluru, focused on the importance of internships and hackathons while talking about her campus experience as a VIT student.
