The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has approached the BCCI to rescue India’s white-ball tour in September and mend ties, strained following Dhaka’s decision to pull out of the T20 World Cup in India.
It is understood that BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul’s regime could end soon and the interim board may start talks with the BCCI.
BCB, believed to be run by sports ministry adviser and anti-India hardliner Asif Nazrul, decided not to send the team to India citing security concerns after Mustafizur Rahaman was barred from playing in the IPL by BCCI.
The BCB requested that their matches be shifted to Sri Lanka, but the ICC found no merit in this as the team ruled out any security issue in India.
Indo-Bangla cricket ties have traditionally been cordial, but recent developments have led to a marked deterioration.
“Yes, BCB has sent a letter to the Indian cricket board. Not only about the Indian men’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh in September, but also about the 50-over-50 Asia Cup that BCB will host next year,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
It is clear that BCB is desperate to host India as the six white-ball matches played by the Men In Blue will sort out the board’s finances for the year with revenue from the sale of linear and digital rights.
TAMIM IQBAL IN LINE FOR THE PRESIDENT?
Among the many items on the agenda, the BCB discussed the resignation of four directors during the reign of BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul.
There is strong resentment in Bangladesh’s cricketing circles over Bulbul’s continuation, especially after he expressed helplessness in convincing caretaker government chief Muhammad Yunus to send a team to India.
“The inquiry committee looking into the T20 World Cup non-participation fiasco will submit its report to the government on April 9.
“It would be interesting to see how Bulbul would position himself once this report is presented. In that case, an interim council will take over and re-elections will be held in 90 days. All eyes will also be on the Bangladesh foreign minister’s visit to Delhi,” said a source following the development.
It is obvious that former Bangladesh captain and the country’s greatest opener Tamim Iqbal could be a strong candidate for the BCB president.
Iqbal, who has urged the government and BCB to take a cautious and practical approach to their hostile retaliation, is an option that the Indian cricket board would also not mind.
