Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu reviewed the preparation of estimates for district canal works, including removal of weeds, water hyacinth and silt, in a video conference with chief engineers on Friday.
Mr. Ramanaidu expressed displeasure that the estimates were not ready by March 25 despite orders to submit them by that date.
The minister said desilting and weeding should be done by May, recalling that under the previous government, permits were granted only in June when the Kharif season begins.
As a result, water had to be drained before repairs and maintenance were completed. He stressed the need to make estimates in advance, secure approval from the finance department expeditiously and complete all works before the irrigation season begins.
The minister pointed out that ever since the TDP-led coalition took over the reins, funds have been provided on a war footing to ensure that canal maintenance work is taken up on priority and asserted that the government is trying to provide irrigation water to every single acre.
