Mysuru Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikant Reddy has ordered temporary diversion of vehicular traffic from the old bridge to the new bridge over the Kabini river along National Highway 766 near Nanjangud town to facilitate the reconstruction of the old bridge.
National Highway 766 from Kerala state border towards Kollegal section near Nanjangud town has two major bridges over the Kabini River, one new and the other old.
Traffic from Mysuru to Nanjangud is currently being shifted over the newly constructed bridge while traffic from Nanjangud to Mysuru is using the old bridge.
Pointing out the need for repair and reconstruction of the old bridge, which is in a deteriorated condition, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sought to divert all vehicular traffic from the old bridge to the newly constructed bridge. The Mysuru District Superintendent of Police said there was no objection to the temporary conversion of the newly constructed bridge into a two-day traffic bridge.
However, the Mysuru District Superintendent of Police has advised that the repair and reconstruction of the old bridge should be started as soon as possible as there is a possibility of congestion on the new bridge due to traffic restrictions on the old bridge, which may hinder the smooth flow of vehicles.
Therefore, the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore, in an order dated 31 March, ordered that all vehicular traffic be diverted from the old bridge to the new bridge, while directing the Superintendent of Police, Mysuru District, NHAI officials and the tahsildar to install suitable signboards along the route to alert people and motorists about the diversion of traffic.
