Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will step down after being sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is scheduled to take place on April 10. Hindustan Times, quoting a JD (U) leader, said that Kumar would resign as Bihar CM within days of his return from Delhi.
“He will take oath as a Rajya Sabha member and after returning from there he will tender his resignation as CM. He has already resigned from Bihar Legislative Council and was elected to Rajya Sabha. So it is only a matter of time before he resigns as CM to pave the way for the next government formation,” a Hindu Time leader said.
Nitish Kumar resigns as MLC
Earlier, on March 30, Kumar had resigned from his membership of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) as a person cannot hold seats in the state legislature and parliament simultaneously for more than 14 days.

According to PTI, as CM, Kumar had special security cover provided under the state’s Bihar Special Security Act, 2000, which is modeled on the SPG Act for the Prime Minister.
The release said the decision to provide security to Kumar was taken in view of the JD(U) president’s imminent move to Parliament, which would require him to relinquish the post of chief minister.
Who will succeed Nitish Kumar?
While there is no official word yet on who will replace Kumar as the next Bihar CM, several names have been doing the rounds recently, including that of Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and Union Minister Nityanand Rai.
There is also growing speculation that Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar may formally join the JD(U) and potentially take a leadership role such as deputy chief minister in the next government, which is likely to be led by the BJP.

However, the opposition, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), claimed that with Kumar’s resignation, the governance of Bihar would be transferred to the hands of leaders from Delhi and Gujarat.
“Bihar has achieved political sovereignty under JD(U) or RJD rule for the last 35 years. Now Bihar has fallen into the hands of two Gujaratis. Now the decision of Bihar CM will be made in Delhi and Gujarat. This is really sad for Bihar,” RJD MP Sudhakar Singh told ANI.
Bihar Assembly Elections
Kumar, who is a record 10-time chief minister of Bihar, resigned from his post a little over four months after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a landslide victory in the assembly elections.
