Taking a dig at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the alleged gherao of seven judicial officers in West Bengal’s Malda district during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj on Thursday (April 2, 2026) said the incident amounted to “crushing democracy”.
Ms Swaraj, who raised the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, said there was a “very serious incident” on Wednesday (April 1, 2026) in which court officials, including female clerks, were detained for several hours in Malda by persons allegedly associated with the ruling TMC.
She urged Parliament to send a strong message and urged the Union government to ensure that “such anarchy is not tolerated in West Bengal”.
Ms. Swaraj also argued that a special intensive revision of electoral rolls “is not a political exercise but a constitutional imperative”.
The Supreme Court on Thursday slammed the West Bengal administration for its alleged inaction over the incident.
In its observations, the court said the episode indicated a “complete failure of state administration” and noted that West Bengal appeared to be the “most polarized state”.
