The fourth stadium in MMR?
The new stadium is likely to move from the iconic Wankhede Stadium, where MS Dhoni famously hit the game-winning six during the ICC Cricket World Cup Final in 2011. Wankhede currently has a capacity of just over 33,000, while the Narendra Modi Stadium, where India recently won the T20 World Cup 2026it holds the record as the world’s largest cricket stadium with a capacity exceeding 1.3 lakh. Apart from the Wankhede, Mumbai also has the CCI-Brabourne Stadium, which has a capacity of around 50,000, while the MMR region also includes the DY Patil Stadium, which has hosted Iconic World Cup triumph for Indian women’s team.
“A 100,000 capacity stadium in the Mumbai metropolitan area will not only elevate cricket in Mumbai but also put Maharashtra firmly on the global sporting map,” Naik said.
Flagship project for growth
The stadium is designed to nurture future talent, strengthen grassroots cricket and create a world-class platform for sportspersons. It is expected to host international matches as well as high-profile domestic and world tournaments.
“This world-class infrastructure will create unique opportunities for player development, provide critical exposure to emerging talent and strengthen the cricket ecosystem at all levels,” added Naik.
The stadium is also expected to act as a catalyst for sports tourism, creating jobs and enhancing the region’s global sports footprint, while significantly improving the fan experience and supporting integrated urban development in the region.
