One person was killed and around 20 others were injured after a tractor-drawn cart carrying devotees overturned and fell into the Gandak canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district, police said on Thursday (April 2, 2026).
The incident took place near Siswa regulator under Khadda police station limits on Wednesday around 8:00 pm (April 1, 2026). A cart carrying nearly 25 devotees plunged into the canal.
According to police, the devotees were traveling from Mamkhor Barhara village in Ghughli area of Maharajganj district to attend the Chaitra Ram Navami Varni fair at Bhaisaha Ghat when the accident occurred. Preliminary findings indicate that the accident occurred when the hook connecting the cart to the tractor broke, causing it to overturn and fall into the canal.
A total of 21 people sustained injuries and were taken to Kushinagar Medical College, where doctors declared Meera Devi (57) brought dead. Khadda Station House Officer Sandeep Singh said some passengers managed to jump out of the trolley and save themselves.
The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem and further investigation into the incident is underway, the police added.
