Liverpool suffered a shocking defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Eddie Howe’s resilient Newcastle side, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak securing the victory with their goals.
This was the first final for Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot, but he struggled to counter Newcastle’s effective tactics on the day.
Federico Chiesa managed to score a consolation goal for the Merseyside club, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide against the Premier League leaders.
Liverpool’s attack, including star players like Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez, failed to make an impact and posed little threat to Newcastle’s defense.
Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher emphasized the need for the Reds to strengthen their attacking options following their unexpected loss in the cup final.
‘This was one of the poorest performances I’ve seen from Liverpool in a cup final,’ Carragher told Sky Sports, as reported by Metro.
‘They’ve had an incredible season, with just one league defeat so far, so it’s hard to be overly critical. However, this match has highlighted areas where Liverpool need to improve.
‘The lack of pace in their attack is a glaring issue. I feel for Mohamed Salah—he was marked out of the game by PSG and wasn’t at his best today, but he’s not getting enough support from the other attackers.
‘The other forwards are decent players, but they’re not top-tier. Liverpool need to sign two quality attackers this summer to complement Salah.
‘The past week has exposed their weaknesses, but it’s also exciting because Liverpool are on track to win the league and still have room to grow.’
