INS Malwan, the second of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Vessels (ASW SWCs) built here by Cochin Shipyard Limited, was delivered to the Indian Navy on Tuesday.
Originally designed and built to Navy specifications and in accordance with DNV classification rules, the ship is named after Malwan, a historic coastal town in Maharashtra associated with the naval heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, an official release said. It also continues the legacy of the earlier minesweeper INS Malwan, decommissioned in 2003.
The 80-meter-long warship with a displacement of around 1,100 tons is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare in coastal waters, low-intensity naval operations and mine warfare. It is equipped with water jet propulsion, torpedoes, anti-submarine missiles, advanced radar and sonar systems.
“With more than 80% original content, Malwan underscores India’s push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, integrating systems developed by domestic defense manufacturers, including MSMEs,” it said.
