Union leaders demanded the repeal of four labor codes, claiming they were harmful to the interests of the working class.
Union officials and activists affiliated to various political parties staged a protest against the Labor Code at the Mahatma Gandhi statue near the GVMC administration building on Wednesday.
Addressing the protesters, the state general secretary of the Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Ch. Narasinga Rao said the working class fought against British rule more than 140 years ago and got 44 laws to protect their rights.
The Narendra Modi-led central government has amended 29 of the 44 laws into four labor codes that “deprive workers of their rights”.
Mr. Narasinga Rao said that on February 12, more than 30 million workers participated in a nationwide strike against the new labor codes, saying that the central government was continuing to implement them. Employees protested Wednesday sporting black badges at their workplace and opposed the move, he said.
Unions will fight fiercely against the new labor laws, he added. Officials of CITU, AITUC, YSRTUC and others participated in the protest.
