A 28-year-old man was arrested after police seized ₹11.40 crore, which was allegedly being carried without valid documents in a car during heightened election vigil in Kasaragod, Kerala early on Wednesday.
The accused PP Anoop, a native of Kannur’s Azhikkal police station, was nabbed around 2 am near the taluk office roundabout. A control unit conducting vehicle inspections flagged the vehicle and recovered cash during the search.
Police said the accused did not produce documents explaining the source of the money. The amount was taken into custody and the case registered. Another court case was opened.
Officials said the seized cash would be presented to the court for further proceedings. They reiterated that the transportation of unaccounted money during the enforcement of the election model code of conduct is a serious violation and calls for strict action.
With parliamentary elections approaching, special forces have intensified checks throughout the district, targeting suspicious vehicles. Checks are being carried out not only on major roads but also on inland routes and vehicles crossing interstate borders, including check posts near Karnataka.
Authorities said surveillance would be further tightened in the coming days to curb the use of money to influence voters.
