A row broke out over the alleged encroachment and sale of land belonging to the historic Theosophical Society of India (TSI), with the matter taking a political turn.
Founded in 1875 and associated with figures such as Annie Besant, TSI is known for its role in India’s intellectual and freedom movements. Historical records say that leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, have visited his centres, including the property in Chittoor, which is now in dispute.
Senior YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Andhra Pradesh Mudaliyar Sangham state president TG Suresh said at a press conference on Monday that some members of his own party had carried out the crackdown, sparking sharp reactions. He questioned how almost three acres of land donated to the society in 1913 could be stolen despite its heritage value.
The YSRCP leader also raised concerns over the way the land was registered, alleging that it was undervalued and could be resold at higher prices, committing a fraud worth more than ₹100 crore. He further criticized the municipal authorities for not preventing the demolition of the building on the spot.
Mr. Suresh demanded an inquiry by central agencies and sought action against those responsible for trespassing into the site belonging to the organization.
