Samastha Kerala State President Jem-iyyathul Ulama Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal has spoken out against involving the Sunni Scholars Forum in political controversies by issuing “inappropriate statements”.
His comments came in the backdrop of senior Samastha leader Umar Faizy Mukkom’s remark that the Indian Union Muslim League should not have fielded women candidates for general seats in the assembly elections. Muslim Youth League leader Fathima Thahiliya is contesting from Perambra in Kozhikode and Jayanthi Rajan, national functionary of IUML, has been fielded from Koothuparamba in Kannur.
A report quoting Mr. Thangal here on Sunday said that people in “responsible positions” making such statements should refrain from doing so. The decision to field candidates should be left to the leadership of the political parties. They should think about its advantages and disadvantages. On such issues, the views of religions and political parties may differ. Mr. Thangal also said that personal defamation and hate campaigns must be avoided.
Mr. Faizy also said that the IUML used to follow the advice of the Samastha on such issues. According to Mr. Faizy, the current stance of the party was not in line with the principles of Samastha.
