A Maoist carrying a reward of ₹5,000 was killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, police said on Sunday.
Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan said that based on information about the presence of Maoists in the forest hills under Polampalli police station in Sukma district, the Sukma District Reserve Guard (DRG) team launched a search operation.
During the operation, there was intermittent firing between the DRG team and the Maoists since Sunday morning, Mr. Chavan said, adding that the body of one Maoist along with his weapon was recovered during the search of the encounter site. The Maoist was later identified as Muchaki Kailash, who was wanted for killing civilians, attacks and conspiracy to carry out IED blasts and carried a reward of ₹5 lakh, Mr. Chavan said.
Speaking after the meeting, Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) P. Sundarraj said that the opportunity for surrender and rehabilitation for the Maoist cadres is now in its last phase and there is very limited time left for them to avail it. The Union Home Ministry has set March 31 as the deadline for reducing Maoist activities to zero.
