Mumbai Indians finally exorcised a stubborn spirit at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night. A 13-year wait for a winning start to their IPL campaign ended with a vintage knock from Rohit Sharma and a coming-of-age statement from Ryan Rickelton as the five-time champions outclassed Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash.
Chasing 221, Mumbai Indians got off to a measured start before Rohit and Rickelton kicked into gear. Rohit got off to a cautious start, scoring 12 off his first eight balls and settling for rating the conditions. Then came the shift. A short ball from Vaibhav Arora was picked up and sent into the stands to change the pace. Soon after, Rohit stepped back to carve Blessing Muzarabani over deep backward point, forcing KKR to change their plans.

At the other end, Rickelton wasted little time settling down. He faced Arora with back-to-back sixes, one of which was lofted over extra cover and the other over deep mid-wicket. With the pace that was on offer, both batsmen capitalized and the power play definitely changed the direction of Mumbai.
Rohit’s intent against Varun Chakravarthy stood out. Using his legs expertly, he picked it up over the covers, repeated the stroke and then pulled it over square leg. The aggression was calculated and relentless. Rohit brought up his half-century off just 23 balls, the fastest of his IPL career and 50th fifty of the tournament, as Mumbai raced to 80 for no loss at the end of six overs.
Rickelton ensured the pace continued even after the field widened. He attacked Sunil Narine, smacking him over deep mid-wicket before clearing the ropes twice more in quick succession. His 24-ball fifty took Mumbai past 100 in nine overs, effectively taking the required pace out of the equation.
The very opening stand put the result beyond serious doubt as Rohit Sharma smashed 78 off 38 balls. Vaibhav Arora’s Anukul Roy had to take a sharp catch to end a knock full of six fours and six sixes. One standout moment was a towering shot over deep extra cover followed by a brief hold of position, a gesture that brought the Wankhede crowd to their feet.
With the platform firmly set, the Bombay Indians were in control of the chase. Suryakumar Yadav, introduced as a strike substitute, started with a kick over short fine leg before falling to Kartik Tyagi for 16 off 8 balls.
Rickelton missed out on a well-deserved hundred after a moment of sharp brilliance in the field. A firm strike of the long ball found Anukul at long off and the South African went for a risky second. Sent back to half-off, he was held up briefly on the spin, allowing Anukul to fire a direct hit from deep. Stranded at short, Ryan Rickelton departed for a well-made 81 off 43 in an innings that all but sealed the contest.
With the required pace at seven, Hardik Pandya started confidently and while Tilak Varma fell for a quick 20, MI completed the chase without much trouble.
RAHANE, RAGHUVANSHI LIFT KKR TO 220
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders posted 220 for 4 after being asked to bat, with Ajinkya Rahane is leading the effort. He started by flicking over long-on for a six off Trent Boult and set the tone with a clean hit. A quirky 26-run lead from Hardik Pandya helped KKR set the early pace.
Finn Allen added 37 off 17 balls, attacking both pace and spin to take KKR to 78 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. The scoring rate remained high as KKR crossed 100 in eight overs with Rahane hitting over 200 at one stage.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi had a slower start but recovered well in the second half of the innings, finding boundaries and clearing the ropes to make a 29-ball 51. He also had a moment of luck when Rohit dropped a catch on the boundary when he was on 21.
KKR looked set to push for a higher total but Shardul Thakur provided early breakthroughs. Early in his spell he dismissed Allen and later removed Cameron Green who was caught in the deep attempting a short delivery. Thakur then accounted for Rahane with a slower cross-seam outside off, which the KKR skipper mistimed to cover.
The wickets slowed KKR’s progress in the middle overs and they could not cross 220 despite late pressure. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were wicketless but were effective in the final overs, keeping the score in check and preventing KKR from adding another late surge.
On a surface that offered real bounce and shot value, Mumbai Indians approached the chase with control. Rohit Sharma set the tone with an innings built on timing and placement before expanding into the striking range, while Ryan Rickelton set the pace with a crucial contribution.
For the Mumbai Indians, the result marked a departure from familiar early season setbacks. This time they started with a performance that combined assurance at the top and composure during the chase, setting the tone for their IPL 2026 campaign.
