“Privately, I’m very satisfied. You’re also waiting for 24 races. This time it’s 22. But normally 24. And then you just ask yourself, is it worth it? Or do I enjoy being at home more with my family? Seeing more friends when you’re not enjoying your sport?”
The quotes follow a report in the Dutch media saying that Verstappen is retiring from the sport. Verstappen said his frustration had nothing to do with Red Bull’s form, but was down to what he called anti-racing cars.
“I can easily accept being P7 or P8 where I am,” he said. “Because I also know that you can’t dominate, be first or second or whatever and fight for the podium every time. I’m very realistic about that and I’ve been there. I won not only in F1.”
“But at the same time, when you’re in P7 or P8 and you’re not enjoying the whole formula behind it, it doesn’t feel natural for a racing driver.
“Obviously I’m trying to adapt to it, but it’s not nice how you have to race. It’s really against the driving. Then at one point, yes, it’s just not what I want to do.”
‘NOT ABOUT THE MONEY’
Verstappen said that in the end it is not about the money, but rather about his passion for the sport.
“And of course you can look at it and make a lot of money. Great. But at the end of the day it’s not about the money because it’s always been my passion,” Verstappen said.
The next month is seen as crucial for Verstappen’s future as F1 takes a short break and the next race takes place in Miami.
