The Socialist Party (India) has announced its support to the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Addressing a press conference on Saturday, state president Kayikkara Babu and national vice-president CP John said a UDF victory was necessary to ensure the continued existence of a secular, socialist and democratic Kerala.
The ‘politics of accommodation’ played by the CPI(M) to win parliamentary elections, through an unholy alliance with communal forces, is an indication of the depth to which the party has sunk. According to them, the Sangh Parivar with the support of the CPI(M) is trying to push communal politics in the state as it does in the northern states.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, whom they identified as close to the Sangh Parivar, became the protector of their interests. They asked if the Chief Minister would openly state that the CPI(M) does not need the support and votes of the communal forces, including the Sangh Parivar.
The CPI(M) made a mockery of both the Janatha Dal parties, which are the constituent parties of the LDF, by taking over their seats and fielding their candidates as its own. The stand taken by the two parties, who continue to remain part of the LDF despite such treatment, is a stain on socialist traditions, they added.
The outcome of the assembly elections will be a verdict on the 10 years of the Pinarayi Vijayan government, during which corruption and extravagance reigned, unemployment reached an all-time high and the health, education and agriculture sectors suffered major setbacks, they added.
