Iran has banned its national and club sports teams from traveling to countries it deems hostile until further notice, citing concerns for the athletes’ safety, Iranian media reported on Thursday. The sports ministry issued the directive amid growing tensions affecting the nation’s sporting activities.
The ministry said the presence of Iranian teams in countries deemed hostile and unable to guarantee the safety of athletes and team members is prohibited. The move directly affects Iran’s participation in international competitions, including the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Iran Football Federation and clubs have been instructed to inform the Asian Football Confederation to facilitate the relocation of match venues. The ministry referred to Tractor FC’s recent match against the United Arab Emirates team in Saudi Arabia, but did not specify which venues or countries are considered hostile.
Iran has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, the team’s participation is in jeopardy due to the travel ban and ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly with the US and Israel.
Earlier this month, former US President Donald Trump noted that while Iran’s national team is welcome to compete in the US, concerns about their safety remain. This added uncertainty to Iran’s FIFA World Cup plans.
In response, the Iran Football Federation is in talks with FIFA to move Iran’s World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, federation president Mehdi Taj said last week. The aim of these talks is to ensure Iran’s continued participation in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Iranian team is training in Turkey ahead of friendly internationals against Nigeria and Costa Rica scheduled for this week. These matches are part of the team’s preparation for the World Cup.
Travel restrictions and discussions about relocating the venue underscore the challenges Iran faces in securing its place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup amid complex international relations and security concerns.
