Rumors of a lockdown in India are completely false, Union Minister Hardeep Puri said on Friday (March 27). Attempts to spread rumors and create panic amid war in West Asia are irresponsible and harmful, minister explained
“Let me be clear, the Government of India is not considering any such proposal,” the minister said amid uncertainty over the war in West Asia.
“In times like these, it is important that we remain calm, responsible and united. Attempts to spread rumors and create panic in such a situation are irresponsible and harmful,” said Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Puri’s clarification comes amid internet speculation about a possible “lockdown” declared in India amid an escalating conflict in West Asia. The speculation was triggered after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled how India was facing the COVID-19 pandemic and related disruptions to the global supply chain. However, the Prime Minister did not mention anything about the lockdown.
Modi government could impose lockdown: Sanjay Raut
Even Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said that given the apprehension, the Modi government might impose restrictions to save petrol and diesel.
The global situation is constantly changing and we are closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains and basic commodities in real time, the minister said.
“Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji, all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, power and other critical supplies to our citizens. We are fully prepared to meet the new challenges,” he said, adding that India has consistently demonstrated resilience against global uncertainty and we will continue to act in a timely, proactive and coordinated manner.
