Akhilesh Yadav condemns alleged attack on Mahua Moitra, urges Speaker to intervene | Today’s news
President of the Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday condemned the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in West Bengal, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of creating an atmosphere of political violence and called on the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the judiciary to take immediate notice of the matter.
According to PTI, Yadav’s remarks came a day after Moitra alleged that BJP workers threw eggs and raised slogans at her during her visit to Nadia district.
In a post on X, Yadav shared a video of Moitra describing the incident as “highly condemnable” and alleged that the BJP was abusing its power in the states it rules.
“The BJP is creating a poisonous atmosphere of political violence and politicization of the police by abusing its power in the states it rules and especially in West Bengal,” he wrote.
Adding that the incident reflected an increasingly aggressive political culture, Yadav said: “The people of the country are deeply angered and outraged by this negative and aggressive behaviour.”
The SP chief also claimed that even BJP leaders and workers would fear such incidents as they might face similar situations in states where the party is not in power or after it loses office.
“Senior BJP leaders may remain protected within their security cover, but ordinary party workers will be left to face public anger on the streets,” he said.
Mahua Moitra claims BJP workers threw eggs during Nadia’s visit
The controversy stems from an incident on Wednesday when Moitra visited Palashi in Kaliganj to attend a Trinamool Congress meeting at party MLA Alifa Ahmed’s residence. She alleged that a group of protesters had gathered outside the venue, shouting slogans like “go back” and “choir” and pelting eggs at her, PTI reported.
“After the change of government in the state, law and order has broken down. The police administration is a mute spectator. BJP has now planned to attack me. These are not common people, they are BJP workers,” Moitra claimed.
The BJP is yet to respond to Moitra’s allegations. According to PTIThe Samajwadi Party, which has 37 MPs in the Lok Sabha, insisted that constitutional bodies should probe the incident, with Yadav insisting that the alleged attack on a sitting MP needed immediate attention.
