A Trinamool Congress worker was shot dead in Kolkata ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Kolkata police have arrested four people in connection with the murder. Tension also rose in the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas district, where local TMC workers allegedly attacked a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election rally.

The deceased, Rahul Dey, was shot dead in clashes that broke out in south Kolkata’s Baghajatin area on Wednesday (March 25) night. Another person, Jeet Mukherjee, was injured in the clashes and is undergoing treatment.
Local residents in the neighborhood reportedly heard gunshots late at night and alerted the police, who later found the two men in a pool of blood.
TMC candidate for Jadavpur, Debabrata Majumdar, visited the spot and asked the police to seal the under-construction building next to the gunfight site.
Local residents of Baghajatin area complained that the deceased, injured and arrested had a criminal past. It is not known whether the killing was political or followed a clash between gangs.
Clashes in Basanti
In a related development, as the parties continued to intensify their election campaigns, there were clashes between the BJP and the TMC in Basanti during a BJP rally. The video of the clashes went viral on social networks.
Police and central troops were dispatched to control the situation. Several people were also detained at the scene.
