The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) on Wednesday inspected several public institutions in Raichur, including a hostel, bus stand, district jail and police stations, as part of a review of basic human rights facilities and conditions.
Commission Chairman T. Shyam Bhat and Member SK Vantigodi arrived in the city in the afternoon and after a brief halt began their visits.
The team first visited the girls’ hostel Dr. BR Ambedkar Pre-Matric Girls’ Hostel near Rangamandir where he interacted with the students and inquired about the facility.
Students and hostel management pointed to overcrowding, with five to seven residents sharing a room. The commission emphasized the need for adequate accommodation based on student strength and advised staff to maintain hygiene, ensure use of clean water for cooking and conduct regular health check-ups and awareness programmes. The team also inspected the kitchen and storage areas to assess the quality of the food.
Later, the committee visited the central bus stand where passengers complained of inadequate services, especially on the Raichur–Lingsugur and Raichur–Manvi routes.
Commuters claimed irregular traffic, lack of stops and inconvenience for students. The Chairman stated that the issues would be discussed in a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner. The team also checked the expiry dates of the items sold at the shops at the bus stand.
In the district jail, the commission members interacted with the inmates and inquired about legal assistance, health care and basic amenities. They inspected prison cells, including those housing female prisoners, and reviewed CCTV surveillance and overall management.
Assistant Warden Anita S. Hiremani informed the team about the prison administration.
The commission also visited the Sadar Bazar police station and examined the records, including the crime register and police station records (PSR). At the women’s police station, the team inspected the children’s room and examined the facilities for dealing with cases involving women and children.
