
Iran War: We have allowed passage through the Strait of Hormuz to friendly nations including China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran has allowed ships from friendly countries, including India, to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz – a critical maritime hub that accounts for nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas trade – has been effectively blocked by Tehran as it continues its retaliatory attacks across the Persian Gulf.
Araghchi said the waterway was closed to “the enemy and their allies”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is not completely closed from our perspective – it is only closed to enemies. There is no reason to allow the ships of our enemies and their allies to pass through.”
UN calls for reopening of Hormuz
Araghchi’s remarks followed those of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called for the strait to be reopened amid global power outages and skyrocketing fuel prices.
“The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz is stifling the movement of oil, gas and fertilizer at a critical moment in the global planting season. Throughout the region and beyond, civilians are exposed to severe damage and live in deep insecurity. The UN is working to minimize the consequences of war. And the best way to minimize those consequences is clear: End the war – immediately,” Guterres said in ‘X
