Census 2027: Over 74,000 self-enumeration applications received in Kozhikode

The 2027 Census takes a new step into the digital age through a self-counting process, the nation’s first digital and fully self-reported head count. Nearly 74,301 people have completed the process in Kozhikode district, according to officials

Kerala’s self-enumeration window ended on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), with field enumeration expected to begin after the completion of the three-day boundary mapping and house numbering exercise that began on Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

“The distribution of the available census kits was completed on Wednesday after the central agency supplied fewer kits than required for the district,” District Collector MS Madhavikutty said.

The self-enumeration facility allowed residents to submit household details online before enumerators visited, easing their workload and speeding up the enumeration process. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister VD Satheesan formally launched the initiative by submitting their own household details online on June 16.

The online form requires residents to answer 34 questions on details of the household head, living conditions, ownership status and access to amenities such as LPG and internet. “Technical details like building numbers and census house numbers are not required to be filled by the residents. These will be recorded by the census commissioners during their visit,” said P. Lalu, senior clerk in the irrigation department, who serves as the census commissioner.

“Any self-reported data errors will be verified and corrected during the field enumeration process. There are some confusing questions on the form, such as questions about the number of married couples in the household and the type of latrine. It is possible that these questions will be answered incorrectly as the options are confusing. These questions will need to be checked during the field enumeration,” he added.
